Innovation Week 2010 — what UNeMed offers you

Below are some of the services offered by UNeMed to the UNMC community.

Contracts

UNeMed negotiates and executes many Intellectual Property-related contracts for UNMC, including:

• Material Transfer Agreements,
  
• Confidential Disclosure (or Non-disclosure) Agreements,
  
• Inter-institutional Agreements; and
  
• Collaboration agreements.

Campus discussion During a discussion at 1 p.m. today in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater, David Brown, Ph.D., director of research at Mirna Therapeutics, will discuss a research project between his company and UNMC that came about thanks to UNeMed’s help.

UNeMed’s goal is to help you safely and effectively transfer materials and information. Transfer of materials or information without an agreement can lead to a loss patent rights and publication rights. Materials and information developed at UNMC are owned by the university and contracts to transfer them require institutional signature.

Intellectual property protection

UNeMed secures intellectual property (IP) rights (such as patents, copyrights and trademarks) and markets these rights to companies interested in developing new products to improve health care.

Technology licensing

In return for a license to the IP, companies agree to pay UNeMed a portion of the proceeds generated through the sale of these new products. This revenue is split by:

• The inventors (30 percent);
  
• The university (60 percent); and
  
• UNeMed (10 percent).

Sponsored research

In addition to licensing IP, UNeMed helps UNMC researchers connect with industry partners to develop new products or solve challenging research problems. UNeMed is in good position to listen to the needs of both parties and help establish productive partnerships that benefit both sides (see sidebar).
