Lookin’ at U – Michelle Desler

picture disc.Quick, think of five things others should know about you.

That’s the theme behind a series in UNMC Today called “Lookin’ at U.” Each Thursday, we will randomly select a medical center employee to feature.

This week, we feature Michelle Desler, a research technologist II in the Eppley Institute.

Here, in her own words, are some fun facts about Michelle:

Michelle Desler
  • I grew up on a farm 35 miles north of Omaha, with my younger sister and brother. My dad still farms and I still enjoy helping with harvest, driving the tractors and trucks. (My husband says I still can’t leave the farm behind, since we have two dogs and two cats.)

  • As of Sept. 23, my husband Mark and I have been married 21 years. He is a lieutenant on the Omaha Police Department. We have two children, Dan, 20, in the Air Force, and Katie, 13, an eighth grader at Buffett Middle School.

  • I donated a kidney to my brother on April 2, 2002. I am one of five people in my family to be a living kidney donor, and we call ourselves the “One Kidney Club.” I serve on the board of directors for the United Network for Organ Sharing/Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and am on the Living Donor committee.

  • I played tenor sax in high school and college and was a member of the Nebraska Cornhusker marching band for two years. I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science at UNL.

  • I enjoy being outside, working on the house and yard, landscaping and painting. I also enjoy reading and spending time with family and friends.

Read UNMC Today next Thursday to see who is featured in the next Lookin’ at U article. Who knows — it could be U.
