Campus adopts active shooter policy

UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC Physicians have implemented a new code for active shooter events consistent with other hospitals across the nation.

“Code Silver” is the new code term for an active shooter, which will be used for overhead announcement or on your computer screen crawler in the event of an active shooter scenario on campus.

What can I do now to prepare for an active shooter event?

  • Watch the “Shots Fired” video and other educational material on the Security website.
  • Register on e2Campus to receive emergency alerts on your cell phone;
  • Report suspicious activities; and
  • Be prepared to take action to protect yourself.

What to do in the event of ‘Code Silver’
If you are in the area where the event occurs:

  • Call 911 and Security Dispatch at 9-5555 — if safe to do so;
  • Identify yourself and your exact location;
  • Describe what is happening;
  • Describe the suspect; and
  • Answer the dispatcher’s questions.

Code silver in your building

If you receive a “Code Silver” indicating that you are in the same building as the event, possible actions should include:

  • Clear the corridor, warn others and help others escape;
  • Do whatever is necessary to survive the situation;
  • Move everyone into rooms that lock from inside, if possible;
  • Barricade doors, turn off lights and close curtains and blinds;
  • Silence any noise making devices (TV, radio, pagers, cell phones, etc.);
  • Make a plan with others in the room about what you will do if the shooter enters; and
  • If possible and when it is safe to do so, call 911 to report the location of the assailant.

Code silver in another building

If you are not in the building identified for the event:

  • Secure your area;
  • Stay where you are; and
  • Avoid the area where the event is occurring.

Code Silver outdoors

If you are outside when a shooting occurs:

  • Drop to the ground immediately
  • Duck and run to cover if close;
  • Move or crawl away from gunfire, utilize obstructions to keep away from the line of fire;
  • When you reach a place of safety;
  • Stay down and do not move;
  • Do not peep or try to see what may be happening; and
  • Wait and listen for directions from police.
