Pick’em Panel talks Nebraska and the Big Ten — what do you think?

We know what many of you are talking about this morning and it’s not the fried cod sandwich with red onions that will be served in the Nebraska Cafe at lunch (although that does sound kind of tasty).

Chances are, in the past few minutes you’ve either talked about or overheard others discuss Nebraska’s possible move to the Big Ten Conference.

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will take up the topic today and official news of such a move could come this afternoon.

So here’s your chance UNMC employees. Click on the “Add a comment” tab above and weigh in about NU’s potential move to the Big Ten.

To help get you started, our Husker Pick’em panel comments below on the latest developments.

“The benefits of the Big Ten far outweigh being in the Big 12. The increased television revenue (nearly double that of the Big 12) is only one reason to make the switch. The academic drive to make this switch may be much more powerful than the athletic reasons. On a personal note, I’m dying to see a yearly match up with Iowa. Somebody needs to quiet those fans of theirs down a bit.” — Robert Zatechka, M.D., a UNMC anesthesiologist and a member of the 1994 Nebraska national title team.

Jeff Hill, M.D.
“The Big Ten would be beneficial for academics, research and then sports. It would be fun to beat Michigan and Penn State every year! On the other hand, losing rivals Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and Kansas would be sad. Seems like money still drives decisions. Loyalty is not what it used to be. Call me old fashioned. Big Red student athletes will still step up to the plate and represent with class.” — Jeff Hill, M.D., associate dean for admissions and student affairs in the College of Medicine and a member of the 1970 and 1971 Nebraska national title teams.

“I was more sad when the Big 8 went defunct. I am optimistic. I think it will open up a whole new world for us in terms of attracting top students, top teachers, the best researchers and BIG research dollars. And it will create a whole new set of traditions. Go Big Red in the Big Ten!” — Lisa Runco, Husker superfan and administrator for internal medicine chairman Lynell Klassen, M.D.

Yes!! The Big 10 can only be a good thing!

I believe a move to the Big 10 would be beneficial academically for Nebraska and, athletically, the conference decisions would be more fair and balanced. There will be no more of the one-sided decisions the schools in Texas have enjoyed. Plus, there is the possibility I can do a road trip double-dip if Nebraska plays at the Gophers and my Vikings are at home the same weekend!

I am still moved today having seen the likes of Bob Devaney, Johnny Rogers, Rich Glover and even Barry Switzer @ Memorial Stadium. The Big 12 has been a definite step backward, hoping the new jump rejuvenates the State's passion – adding a Lyle Bremser clone would complete the package.

You are so right, Steve Soley! I am a huge Viking fan as well, my brother is a Gopher, my husband a born and raised in Iowa City Hawk Eye, and my boss at UNMC is a Michigan Wolverine Husker hater!! It is going to make for very interesting football seasons for me!!!
