Four researchers will receive 2010 Internal Medicine Research Awards today for exceptional achievements in research.
The awards will be presented today during the special internal medicine grand rounds at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.
Stephen Bonasera, M.D., will receive the Internal Medicine Basic Science Research Award today, then he will present a special grand rounds on his research. |
At the ceremony:
- Stephen Bonasera, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of geriatrics, will receive the Internal Medicine Basic Science Research Award;
- Shannon Wakeley, M.D., endocrinology fellow, will receive the Internal Medicine Fellowship Research Award;
- Warren Ancheta Thorp, M.D., house officer II, will receive the Internal Medicine Resident Research Award; and
- Nobuhiro Kanaji, M.D., Ph.D., a research associate in the section of pulmonary, critical care, sleep, and allergy medicine, will receive the Laureate Award for a Visiting Scientist.
Dr. Bonasera will be honored for his aging research, for which he has earned several awards including a National Institutes of Aging R01 grant.
Dr. Wakeley has earned praise for taking on a research project into gene expression in thyroid cancer cells and obtaining meaningful results.
Dr. Ancheta independently enrolled a total of 50 patients and secured intramural funding for his study titled “Vitamin D Levels in Subjects with Chronic Urticaria and Angioedema” during his one-month research rotation.
Dr. Nobuhiro Kanaji, a visiting scientist from Takamatsu, Japan, has worked successfully on two distinct projects regarding endothelial cells since his arrival at UNMC in October 2007.
