Medical center recognized for bariatric surgery

UNMC’s hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

The designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.

The medical center bariatric surgery program — the largest in Omaha and Lincoln — has treated 1,550 patients since 1992. The program offers gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric band surgeries. All can be done with laparoscopic, minimally invasive approaches.

“We are honored to receive this designation,” said Corrigan McBride, M.D., associate professor of general surgery at UNMC and a bariatric surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center.

To earn a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation, the medical center underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected.

The program is staffed by four surgeons, two physician’s assistants, two registered nurses, dieticians and a psychologist.
