The budget — a product of a special session of the Nebraska Legislature — reduced NU’s budget by $8.8 million for fiscal year 2009-2010 and $15 million for 2010-2011.
NU officials originally foresaw larger cuts, particularly for 2010-2011.
“While the cuts will have an impact across the university system, including here at UNMC, we recognize it could have been worse,” said Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D. “We thank Gov. Heineman and the Legislature for their efforts to make sure the university received strong support.”
Dr. Maurer made special mention of NU President James B. Milliken, J.D., for his work to ensure the university’s needs were met. The chancellor also thanked employees, students and others who contacted lawmakers and others to support the university and UNMC.
“Although UNMC’s final budget cuts aren’t yet known, all units have been advised to prepare for reductions this year and next year,” said Don Leuenberger, vice chancellor for business and finance.
The NU Board of Regents will take up the budget issue at its December meeting.
