Sen. Johanns visits UNMC

U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns, left, talks with Air Force Staff Sgt. Wendell Parks and his wife, Stephanie, during the senator’s visit to UNMC last week.

The Parks have a child with autism who is treated at UNMC’s Munroe Meyer Institute.

Johanns’ UNMC visit included:

Meetings with Wayne Fisher, Ph.D., director of the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Cathleen Piazza, Ph.D., director of Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program;
A tour of the Sorrell Center’s Clinical Skills Laboratory; and
A visit with Ben Boedeker, M.D., Ph.D., professor of anesthesiology, about medic training in Afghanistan.

“It was great to have Sen. Johanns on campus,” said Mark Bowen, director of UNMC Government Relations. “We relish the opportunity to show him the excellent work our faculty and staff do to help meet the state’s health care needs.”

Johanns also dropped in on a meeting of the Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Physicians that was being held in the Sorrell Center to talk with the members about health care reform.
