The first symposium was held last year in Beijing.
“This is an excellent opportunity for a vigorous exchange of information between UNMC scientists, physicians, administrators and our distinguished counterparts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS),” said Jialin Zheng, M.D., professor of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience and director of UNMC’s Asian Pacific Rim Development Program.
The U.S.-China CLS is a partnership between UNMC and CAS that promotes research collaboration in areas such as:
- Cancer;
- Cardiovascular diseases;
- Genetics and human diseases;
- Immunology;
- Neurosciences; and
- Stem cells and regenerative medicine.
Several U.S. institutions have expressed interested in joining the joint center, including Rutgers University and the University of Arizona.
The center is based at the newly established Beijing Life Science Institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the annual symposium is one of its premier functions.
Last year, seven U.S. scientists presented at the first symposium in Beijing, which focused on neuroscience and immunology. The U.S. investigators were from the National Institutes of Health, the University of Washington in Seattle and UNMC.
This year’s symposium will feature presenters from institutions such as:
- Beijing Institutes of Life Science of Chinese Academy of Sciences
- Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences;
- Beijing Anzhen Hospital of Capital University of Medical Sciences;
- Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences;
- Harvard Medical University; and
- UNMC.
This year’s topics will include cancer, immunology and development.
The symposium also will feature presentations from UNMC graduate student applicants who wish to attend the International Student Research Forum, which will be held in November in Queensland, Australia.
