Jonathan Jacobsen

Jonathan Jacobsen — an incoming second-year medical student — died Friday in an automobile accident near Merna, Neb.

Jacobsen — who was from the Merna-Anselmo area — was 24.

“Our hearts go out to the Jacobsen family,” said College of Medicine Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D. “Jonathan was an outstanding young man who had the whole world in front of him.

“This is a tragedy that is deeply felt by our entire campus, but especially by those who were fortunate enough to have known Jonathan. It’s a real loss.”

Funeral services for Jacobsen will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Anselms Catholic Church in Anselmo.

David Carver, Ph.D., director of counseling and student development at UNMC, is available to talk to students who are grieving following Jacobsen’s death.

  1. Gerald Moore, M.D. says:

Jonathan was a good student who was very concerned with issues related to medical student education. He was one of two representatives from his class to the student curriculum committee. He met monthly with other class representatives and me to address student concerns. His contributions were insightful and professional. His contributions will be missed.

  2. Hugh Stoddard, M.Ed., Ph.D. says:

Jonathan was the type of student who always made me feel optimistic about the future of medicine and the world in general. He exhibited dedication, enthusiasm and a good spirit; his presence will be sorely missed by faculty and students alike.

I'm sorry; my sympathies to the family.

  4. Jorge Roderiguez-Sierra, Ph.D. says:

I am in shock about this accident. Jonathan was not only a good student, but a very nice individual. I enjoyed very much my interactions with him in class and in our small groups. He had a great attitude about life and will be missed in his class.

  5. Euem Osmera says:

I don't know Jonathan, but I feel sad of his passing. My prayers are with the families.

  6. Carol Kolar says:

The world suffers damage when a young person with such potential is lost. I didn't know Jonathan, but my heart goes out to his family and friends. We are all a little less when we lose a future.

  7. Phillip Guillen says:

This is hard for me to realize. Jonathan was our up and coming AMA delegate. He was so excited to write policy and get involved with the AMA and future of physicians. We were just in Chicago in June before his big trip and I took him out for a night on the town with the AMA medical students. He and I spent hours talking about his life, future and we had a great time. I will not forget this man. This is so tragic.
