Scam alert — watch out for phishing e-mails

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a note from UNMC Information Technology Services.)

Some UNMC e-mail users have received authentic-looking e-mails that seem to be from the UNMC Help Desk that instruct users to provide their user IDs and passwords.

Please be advised, the UNMC Help Desk will NEVER request your user ID/password via e-mail.

This technique — called “phishing” — is used by spammers and scammers. Those who did respond to these phishing e-mails exposed their e-mail accounts, which were then used to send thousands of e-mails from the unmc.edu accounts.

Please ensure that you do not share your user/ID and password. If you are concerned that someone else might know your user ID/password, please contact the Help Desk at 559-7700 and they can help change your user ID/password.
