Latest edition of UNMC Discover now online

picture disc.For some, UNMC’s newest research facility, the Durham Research Center II, is a source of pride. But for many more people, it is a symbol of hope, progress and cures.

In the spring 2009 edition of UNMC Discover — now online at www.unmc.edu/discover — the campus community can learn more about the tower of hope, as well as meet a researcher from each floor.

The 28-page publication also features:

  • Microbubble research, led by Tom Porter, M.D., and Feng Xie, M.D., that may lead to a safer diagnostic tool for heart damage;
  • UNMC’s newest scientist laureate, Howard Gendelman, M.D., and his research;
  • The top researchers at UNMC who were named Distinguished Scientist award winners for 2008;
  • Pioneering work by College of Pharmacy Dean Courtney Fletcher, Pharm.D., on HIV/AIDS drug dosing standards, especially for children;
  • Research by Eyal Margalit, M.D., Ph.D., on a device that may help restore sight to people blinded by disease;
  • A recent recruit to the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center, Rene Opavsky, Ph.D., who uses a unique mouse model to learn more about genes in leukemia cells.

Video clips accompany some of the stories as Web extras, giving readers an opportunity to hear UNMC scientists talk about their programs.

The magazine also features an opportunity to join the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures. Information about the organization and its goals are included in this issue of UNMC Discover. Membership is free; simply complete and mail the postage-paid reply card.

Individuals may pick up a printed copy of UNMC Discover from magazine racks conveniently located around the UNMC campus. Individuals also may contact UNMC Discover Editor Elizabeth Kumru at ekumru@unmc.edu or 559-4691 with requests for copies or with story ideas. The next edition of UNMC Discover will be published in November.

UNMC Discover, published twice a year by the vice chancellor for research and the department of public relations, features in-depth stories about interesting and groundbreaking research being done at the medical center. The magazine is supported, in part, by UNeMed, the technology transfer organization for UNMC.
