Think Green — Earth Day 2009

picture disc.The Campus Sustainability Committee would like to remind the UNMC community that Earth Day 2009 will be celebrated on Saturday.

In Omaha, activities for the whole family will take place at Elmwood Park at 808 S. 60th St. The event will include vendors, entertainment, information and presentations.

Bus challenge update

The onus has been upped in the Young Professionals Council Bus Challenge — of which UNMC is a co-sponsor.

Any participant who gets a picture of an Omaha mayoral or city council candidate riding the bus during the three-week challenge will win a free sub sandwich from Jimmy John’s.

The challenge starts Saturday and is designed to get young professionals to expand their bus riding habits, assess the Metro Area Transit (MAT) bus system’s service, provide feedback about the strengths and weaknesses of the current system to increase use, and to reinforce public transportation’s role in sustainable living.

Mayoral candidates Hal Daub and Jim Suttle will both participate in the challenge. Those who get photos of Daub and/or Suttle or any Omaha city council candidate on a bus can send the photos to ypbuschallenge@gmail.com, to the challenge’s Facebook or Twitter pages or to 681-9458 to collect their Jimmy John’s sandwiches.

For more information about the bus challenge, contact Beth Katz at (402) 659-9497 or Craig Moody at (402) 681-9458.

Activities on the main stage include music performances by Michael Murphy, The Tree Huggers, 112 North Duck, Black Squirrels, Rhythm Collective and Polydypsia. Omaha mayoral candidates as well as several speakers will discuss a variety of Earth Day topics.

The health and energy area will include the belly dancers, tai chi, yoga, pet therapy and the healing arts massage.

The demonstration stage presentations on:

  • Gardening and local food production;
  • Home energy efficiency on a budget;
  • Native landscaping strategies for the home; and
  • Constructing a rain barrel.
