Latest edition of Discover now available online

picture disc.UNMC researchers have developed a special mouthwash that may help prevent bone loss in the jaw and an orthpaedic implant coating inspired by the lotus leaf and cubic zirconia.

These are among the stories inside the fall 2008 edition of UNMC Discover, which is now available online.

This issue’s cover story highlights a new, UNMC-developed drug delivery system that targets bone. This system was developed by UNMC’s Dong Wang, Ph.D.

The 28-page publication also features:

  • A UNMC scientist who uses the properties of the lotus leaf and cubic zirconia to make orthopaedic implants stronger;
  • Research into how apathy affects the treatment of people with chronic diseases;
  • UNMC scientists who mentor junior investigators;
  • A nursing study that examines a new model of care for chronic disease;
  • Inroads into the early detection of pancreatic cancer; and
  • The results of the largest study on HIV drugs that was co-authored by a UNMC clinical researcher.

Video clips accompany some of the stories as Web extras, giving readers an opportunity to hear UNMC scientists talk about their programs.

The magazine also features an opportunity to join the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures. Information about the organization and its goals are included in this issue of UNMC Discover. Membership is free; simply fill out the postage-paid reply card and mail it in.

Individuals may pick up a printed copy of UNMC Discover later this month from magazine racks conveniently located around the UNMC campus. Individuals also may contact UNMC Discover Editor Elizabeth Kumru at ekumru@unmc.edu or 559-4691 with requests for copies or with story ideas.
