The celebration will run from 2 to 4 p.m. with a special program starting at 3 p.m. that will feature comments from UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., and others.
During the celebration, students will display information about the SHARING Clinics (Student Health Alliance Reaching Indigent Needy Groups) and the 3 p.m. program will be followed by an unveiling of artwork that commemorates the clinics.
The SHARING Clinics provide high-quality, free or low cost health care to the underserved in Omaha and Lincoln while also providing educational opportunities for students.
The original SHARING Clinic started in 1997 and has grown to include three other clinics — RESPECT (Responsible Early STD Prevention Education and Community Testing), which opened in October 2001; and GOODLIFE (Greater Omaha Outreach for Diabetes Lifestyles Impacting Fitness and Education), which opened in 2002; and a dental SHARING Clinic opened recently in Lincoln by College of Dentistry students.
In 2007, 700 patient visits were logged at the clinics. More than 6,200 patient visits have been logged in the clinics since 2002.
Supervised by UNMC and community health professionals, the clinics are staffed by students of various health disciplines including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, physical therapy, clinical laboratory science and nutrition.
