They’ve shown remarkable leadership, unparalleled professionalism and a commitment to their patients and colleagues. Wednesday night, UNMC’s hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, honored this year’s “Legends” for their extraordinary contributions to the practice of medicine.

“The Legends honor is an opportunity to recognize the loyalty and hard work these professionals dedicated to their patients, families and the hospital, and acknowledge the success enjoyed today is a result of their commitment to quality care,” said Michael Geis, executive director of development at The Nebraska Medical Center.

The 2007 Clarkson Legends honorees are:

James A. Canedy

As administrator and chief executive officer of Clarkson Hospital, Mr. Canedy is remembered for his exemplary service and dedication. He oversaw a phenomenal period of growth and expansion for the hospital, including Clarkson’s 1955 move from 26th Street and Dewey Avenue to its current location. Mr. Canedy died in 1989.

Earl G. Greene Jr, M.D.

Dr. Greene spent more than 30 years on the medical staff at Clarkson Hospital. He served as chairman of the department of pathology, director of laboratories and director of the Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital School of Medical Technology. Dr. Greene retired in 1988.

Larry E. Roffman, M.D.

After providing leadership for his colleagues as president of the Clarkson medical/dental staff, Dr. Roffman was elected to the board of directors for Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital. A longtime Omaha obstetrician/gynecologist, he spent 35 years in private practice.

Donald P. Skoog, M.D.

Dr. Skoog is a retired pathologist and educator. He joined the medical staff of Clarkson Hospital in 1963, serving in a number of roles including chairman of the department of pathology. Throughout his career, he has remained active in the American Society for Clinical Pathology and is a past member of the Laboratory Medicine Editorial Review Board.

Gail Walling Yanney, M.D.

A current member of The Nebraska Medical Center’s board of directors, Dr. Walling Yanney’s ties to Clarkson Hospital began early in her career. A skilled anesthesiologist, she spent 25 years as a member of the medical staff. Dr. Walling Yanney is also a former director of the Clarkson Hospital Foundation.

Albert S. Black, M.D., and family

The family of Dr. Albert S. Black is being recognized for their “Generations of Medicine.” While Dr. Black died in 2002, this tribute recognizes a true family dedication to the medical profession. Dr. Black opened his practice in 1949, becoming one of the first board certified plastic surgeons in Omaha. He was later joined in practice by his son, Steven Black, M.D., whose own family has shown a deep commitment to medicine. Wife, Joyce Black, Ph.D., is an associate professor at the UNMC College of Nursing. Son Jonathan Black, M.D., recently started his medical residency in plastic surgery. Jonathon’s wife, Katie, also recently started her medical residency in anesthesia.

The Legends award recipients were nominated and selected by a committee of fellow doctors. To be nominated and honored as a Legend, individuals had to meet a wide variety of criteria including providing high quality care to their patients, contributing to the growth of the hospital, excellent character and treating nurses and other health care professionals with respect and dignity.

The Legend 2007 recipients were honored at a private dinner and reception featured a short video presentation highlighting their careers and accomplishments as well as comments from friends, family members and colleagues.

Clarkson Regional Health Services and The Nebraska Medical Center are sponsors of the Legends award.
