Bash to benefit children with cancer Aug. 18

Omaha-area Optimist Clubs have joined together to hold the “Summer Bash for Childhood Cancer” on Saturday, August 18 at The Digz at 4428 S. 140th St.

Starting at 7 p.m., it promises to be an evening of fun, entertainment and excitement with dancing to the Grease Band and all for the cause of fighting Childhood Cancer.

This fundraiser is a Nebraska extension of an International Optimist program, the Childhood Cancer Campaign (CCC). The CCC program has four areas of focus:

  • Support children diagnosed and receiving treatment for cancer;
  • Support families and care partners of children with cancer;
  • Support for healthcare and service providers; and
  • Support for cancer research.

“The costs of caring for a loved one that is sick can be overwhelming and we were so grateful for the help we received from the Optimist Club,” said Tom and Lynn Pickrel, the parents of a childhood cancer patient. “Their support helped make it possible for us to be there with our son while he was undergoing stem cell transplant treatment.”

Summer Bash Ambassador is 8-year-old Kendra, a survivor of brain cancer. Kendra had extensive brain surgery to remove her tumor at Omaha Children’s Hospital and received 33 radiation treatments at The Nebraska Medical Center.

“I am now cancer free and celebrate life each and every day,” Kendra said.

The Summer Bash will benefit children’s oncology at The Nebraska Medical Center, Children’s Hospital, Camp Quality, Camp COHOLO and families that have children with cancer.
