UNMC students receive NMEA scholarships

The Nebraska Medical Education Association Inc. has provided more than $800,000 in scholarship funds to UNMC students since 1984.

The non-profit organization, founded in 1959 and sponsored by local physicians, provides scholarships to medical students. Awards, which first began at $2,000 each, are now valued at $10,000 per recipient.

“This dedicated group of physicians, concerned about helping others through the rigors of medical school, is to be highly commended for their very generous contributions and support,” said Shirley Dohring, assistant director of Financial Aid at UNMC. “As education costs soar and changes occur in the medical field, loan debts are rapidly increasing. The members of the Nebraska Medical Education Association deserve special recognition for realizing the toll of high loan debt, recognizing high quality students, and taking action to assist others.”

The 2007-08 recipients are: Senior medical students — Justin A. Cramer and Kelli L. Olechoski; Junior medical students — Nicholas C. Branting, Jeffrey L. Gartrell, Jennifer S. Hansen, Quinton S. Kelly, Jessica R. Moran, Rachel R. Thomsen and Carrie E. Wilcox.
