Graduate student Clint Malcom tells fellow students about his poster presentation during the UNMC College of Nursing’s Spring Research Colloquium.

The UNMC College of Nursing held its annual Spring Research Colloquium Wednesday. The project, required for graduation, is a culmination of about a year of work and equivalent of five to six graduate credit hours.

“The students have worked very hard over a two-year period of time,” said Jan Twiss, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing and judge during the event. “Research is important to the advanced practice registered nurse. Disseminating research is very important if we want to see a change in nursing practices.”

The 17 posters and six oral presentations made by students were results of a required research methods course and research project during which students work with faculty on a piece of the faculty members’ research.

Rosaline Olade, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing and judge during the UNMC College of Nursing’s Spring Research Colloquium, asks Lori Barrett, family nurse practitioner graduate student, questions about her poster.

The projects are judged on clarity of problem defined, theoretical/conceptual framework, methodology and design, interpretation of findings based on data, relevance to the research to nursing, overall appearance of poster and response to questions.

The college hosted Jacquelyn Campbell, Ph.D., associate dean for Faculty Affairs at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, who spoke on “Nursing Research Making a Difference: Keeping Women Healthy & Safe.”

“We’re really excited about Dr. Campbell dovetailing with this event,” said Bernice Yates, Ph.D., associate dean for research, UNMC College of Nursing. “It provides an excellent example of research scholarship.”
