The following are highlights from the UNMC College of Medicine Volunteer Faculty Awards program for the second half of 2003. The program recognizes outstanding volunteer faculty members for their contributions to the campus, classroom and clinical settings.
Everett Madson, M.D., an ophthalmologist at Midwest Eye Care PC in Omaha, is co-director of the retina fellowship training program.
“Dr. Madson has supported the ophthalmology training program at UNMC for many years,” his nominator said. “He has shared his knowledge and expertise in training scores of ophthalmology residents and was instrumental in establishing a training program for sub-specialists vitreoretinal surgery at UNMC.”
Col. Paul Mueller, M.D., a family medicine physician at Offutt Air Force Base, is the residency program director for the family medicine residency clinic at Ehrling Bergquist Hospital at Offutt.
“Dr. Mueller is an outstanding family physician who serves as our associate program director for the USAF (United States Air Force) Track. As such, he is responsible for all civilian faculty and residents while they are at Ehrling Bergquist Hospital. He has provided innovative and dynamic leadership through some difficult times.”
For the past 23 years, Donald Owen, M.D., a surgeon at Physicians Clinic in Omaha, has continuously had family practice residents serve on his inpatient surgery service.
“He is an enthusiastic teacher whose service is always highly rated by the residents.”
Joseph Ellison, M.D., a pediatrician at Omaha Children’s Clinic, has voluntarily worked with medical students since 1982.
“Joe Ellison is a teacher’s teacher, whether it’s students, residents, nurses or patients. He truly imparts his wisdom and sensitivity and empathy.”
Stacie Bleicher, M.D., a pediatrician at Capital City Pediatrics in Lincoln, has worked with medical students since 1993.
“Dr. Bleicher has been instrumental in obtaining Nebraska legislative support for children. She is an ardent advocate and has the respect of the legislature. She is a true pediatrician – a child’s advocate.”
Betsy Stephenson, M.D., a pediatrician at Children’s Physicians Mission Village and UNMC College of Medicine graduate, has always welcomed students in the office.
“Dr. Stephenson teaches at all times – students, residents, families and patients. She always takes the time to explain things, listen and share. She exemplifies the commitment of a pediatric physician.”
