Workers demolish three houses and an aging 12-unit apartment building to make way for a new, 60-unit student apartment complex. |
UNMC is building a three-story, 61,000-gross-square-foot apartment building at 38th Avenue and Jackson Street, near the Ronald McDonald House. The new building will contain 60 rental units, each with high-speed Internet access, a washer/dryer, dishwasher and other modern amenities. A mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments will be available.
“The project will provide UNMC students with safe, quality housing, along with the added convenience of living on campus,” said Keith Swarts of UNMC’s Business & Finance office.
The University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the $4.8 million project in June. Scheduled for completion in August 2004, the project will be paid for by revenue bonds.
UNMC recently demolished three houses and an aging 12-unit apartment building to make way for the new apartment complex. This is the first apartment building UNMC has ever built on its campus, Swarts said.
UNMC currently owns 105 rental units, which vary in age from the early 1900s to the 1960s, and leases them to students at market rate. The units lack the amenities and security features preferred by today’s student, Swarts said.
Business and Finance has started a waiting list for students interested in renting a unit in the new building. Contact Esther Collins at 559-5201 if you are interested in adding your name to the waiting list.
