Committee appointed for College of Medicine dean search

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., has appointed a 15-member search committee to identify candidates for the position of dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. James Armitage, M.D., recently announced he would retire from the position Sept. 1. He plans to stay at UNMC, focusing his efforts on teaching, clinical research and patient care.

“I appreciate the willingness of the search committee members to serve,” Dr. Maurer said. “The dean’s post in the College of Medicine is a critically important position for the Medical Center as we face the challenges ahead. We are committed to finding the best candidate to help us build upon the successes of past deans.”

Jon Thompson, M.D., professor of surgery, will lead the search committee. Other members are:

  • Stephen Smith, M.D., chief medical officer, Nebraska Health System;
  • Joseph Sisson, M.D., professor, internal medicine-pulmonary medicine;
  • Pamela Carmines, Ph.D., professor, physiology/biophysics;
  • John Windle, M.D., professor, internal medicine-cardiology;
  • Michael Sitorius, M.D., chairman, family medicine;
  • Patricia Hageman, Ph.D., director, professor, physical therapy education, School of Allied Health Professions;
  • Judith Christman, Ph.D., chairwoman, biochemistry and molecular biology;
  • Margaret (Peggy) Wheelock, Ph.D., professor, College of Dentistry, Lied Transplant Center;
  • Duane Krause, M.D., president, College of Medicine Alumni Association;
  • John McClain, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and chief student affairs officer;
  • Kristie Hayes, M.D., assistant dean, student and multicultural affairs;
  • Paul Paulman, M.D., president-elect, UNMC Faculty Senate;
  • Harlan Noddle, member, Nebraska Health System Board of Directors; and
  • Casey Johnston, UNMC Student Senate president, student regent and third-year medical student.
