Heard joined the Eppley Institute as the animal care facility supervisor in July 1968, a role he remained in until retiring this past April.
Heard moved to Omaha from the Chicago Medical School with Dr. Philippe Shubik, the second director of the Eppley Institute. Heard had worked in the animal facility there since 1957.
Ed Ramspott, assistant director of UNMC’s Finance & Administration, said Heard was extremely conscientious and dedicated about his work. “He was well thought of by all who knew him and will be remembered by all who were in contact with him as a truly great individual,” Ramspott said.

Heard managed the facility that housed more than 20,000 research animals in an extremely efficient, humane and professional manner, said Terence Lawson, Ph.D.
“David established strong links between his own staff and the researchers over the years,” Lawson said. “In his role, he was instrumental in much of the research success that has been enjoyed by the Eppley Institute.”
