Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Dean for Graduate Studies
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is an academic medical center on the move. One of four University of Nebraska campuses, UNMC is the state’s only public health sciences center. UNMC has a student enrollment of 2,819 and offers degrees in medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, allied health professions and graduate studies. These educational programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution. UNMC has a vision of becoming a world-class academic medical center. Through its commitment to research, education, outreach and patient care, UNMC has already established itself as one of the country’s leading centers in cancer, cardiovascular diseases, bioterrorism preparedness, genetics, neurodegenerative diseases, transplantation biology, biomedical technology and rural health. In the past year, UNMC’s research funding from external sources increased by 23 percent and now exceeds $50 million annually. In that same period, federal funding increased by 36 percent and now exceeds $34 million.
UNMC is seeking a Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Dean for Graduate Studies to serve as the chief academic officer for the medical center. This position reports to the Chancellor and is responsible for leading the academic enterprise in achieving excellence in accomplishing the academic mission of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. This individual maintains and builds productive relationships throughout the university community, board of regents, the local medical community, legislative community and all other academic campuses and state agencies as necessary or assigned. This individual recommends all new academic programs and all faculty recruitment and appointments assuring conformity to the state and national policies of regulatory, academic and accreditation agencies and organizations.
The ideal candidate will have served a minimum of 3-5 years in an academic leadership position within a major medical center. M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent advanced health professions degree and successful scholarship in one of the health fields are required. Candidates must demonstrate a record of creating and maintaining a positive, respectful culture and ability to develop collaborative relationships and/or partnerships. Candidates must have effective interpersonal skills, responsive decision-making and creative problem solving within a team environment. Knowledge and experience with strategic planning, program innovation and evaluation, grantsmanship, student services, public-policy formation, and distance and online education within the health professions are essential. Candidates must be able to demonstrate competency in the use and support of technology to promote educational goals. Responsibility in budget oversight and fiscal accountability is required.
