Motorists traveling 42nd Street near UNMC and the Nebraska Medical Center can expect traffic slowdowns and temporary detours for planned utility work by Metropolitan Utilities District.
On Monday, May 5, the southbound lane of 42nd Street from Dodge to Farnam streets will close through June 6. Also on May 5, all north and southbound lanes between Farnam and Dewey streets will close through July 5.
Throughout the work, access to Clarkson Tower and Lot 1 will remain from at least one direction, and 42nd and Emile streets will never be completely blocked. Signage will be in place to detour and direct traffic during this time. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time to reach their campus destinations and should be aware of pedestrians in the area.
During this time, Harney Street will be closed from Farnam to 41st streets, resulting in two-way traffic at the corner of 42nd and Farnam streets.

Also, beginning May 5, med center employees who park in Lot 5 must enter and exit the parking structure from Dewey Avenue. The north entrance of the garage will be closed until spring 2027.
