Zachary Van Roy, an MD/PhD trainee in the laboratory of Dr. Tammy Kielian, has indeed had a very productive month as he has published two first author manuscripts in Nature Communication and Cell Reports Medicine. The manuscript published in Nature Communication established that S. aureus biofilm infections elicit distinct immune and metabolic responses depending on their location as unique signatures were noted in craniotomy vs prosthetic joint infections. These data suggest that it will be difficult to identify immune stimulating therapeutics, including vaccines, that have broad acting activity against S. aureus as each niche is distinct (apples and oranges, thus the figure as designed by Zach).
