Annual faculty awards: Apar Kishor Ganti, MD

Apar Kishor Ganti, MD

Apar Kishor Ganti, MD, will be a recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Junior Faculty Award during the UNMC Faculty Senate annual meeting on April 16. The award recognizes faculty who exemplify excellence in the mentoring of junior faculty at UNMC.

  • Name: Apar Kishor Ganti, MD
  • Title: Professor, UNMC Division of Oncology and Hematology, Department of Internal Medicine, UNMC College of Medicine
  • Joined UNMC: 2005
  • Hometown: Pune, India

What are the greatest rewards of mentoring other faculty members?

The satisfaction of seeing the junior faculty blossom and develop successful careers of their choice.

Can you describe a moment in your career when you realized you had picked the right occupation?

The advances in cancer treatments over the years have made me realize that if I had to do it all over again, I would pick becoming an academic hematologist-oncologist again. When I started my career, most patients with stage IV lung cancer did not live longer than eight to 10 months. Now, however, it is not uncommon to see patient diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer doing well three to four years after their diagnosis.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a mentor?

Junior faculty are not a reflection of you. We often tend to feel that everyone has goals similar to ours. Focusing on the mentee’s career goals, rather than projecting your goals on the mentee, is the most important challenge I had to overcome.

How do you know when you’ve been successful as a mentor?

When your mentee does not feel the need to seek your advice on major decisions.
