New resident spotlight: Vernon Rockett

Vernon Rockett is a new resident physician with the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.

Medical School: Creighton University School of Medicine

Why did you choose the medical field: I decided to pursue medicine because I find it fascinating and have a passion for serving my community.

What made you choose anesthesiology: I chose anesthesiology because it allows me to support patients during some of their most vulnerable moments, while also engaging in the aspects of medicine I’m most passionate about. I’m drawn to the specialty’s deep reliance on physiology, my favorite subject, and I appreciate the hands-on nature of anesthesia, where procedures often have an immediate and meaningful impact on patient care.

List three accomplishments you are proud of:

  • I am proud to be the first doctor in my family.
  • I am proud of myself for matching into anesthesia, the best specialty out there!
  • I am proud of all the lifelong friendships I have maintained throughout my life.

List three things about you that others may not know:

  • I am bilingual, my mom immigrated from Panama when she was 27 years old so I grew up speaking both Spanish and English.
  • I am a huge sports fan, I love basketball, football, and soccer.
  • I love to cook! I enjoy experimenting with different combinations of seasonings and marinades.
