IT alert: New banner to show on certain outside emails

UNMC employees soon will notice a new banner on top of emails from certain outside senders.

The email security protocol known as DMARC has become an industry standard, and that standard now requires that all emails include DMARC records.

DMARC stands for “Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance.” It helps prevent email spoofing by verifying the authenticity of email senders using a domain name, protecting against phishing attacks by ensuring only authorized senders can use a specific domain to send emails.

UNMC employees do not have to do anything different to send or receive email.

Starting March 18, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine Information Technology will add a banner to the top of emails that arrive from companies that don’t have DMARC records in their email.

The med center system also will send an auto-reply to the senders of those emails, letting them know that their email system does not comply with DMARC regulations.

On July 14, emails that arrive from companies that don’t have DMARC records in their email will be quarantined and not delivered.  An auto-reply will go to the sender notifying them that their email was not delivered because it didn’t pass DMARC standards.
