Celebration of life service for Dr. Cowan is Feb. 21

Ken Cowan, MD, PhD

A celebration of life service for Ken Cowan, MD, PhD, will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, at the Yanney Conference Room in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. A reception will follow in The Restaurant.

The med center community is invited to attend the celebration.

Dr. Cowan joined UNMC in 1999 as the director of what was then called the Eppley Cancer Center and the Eppley Institute for Cancer Research. After stepping down in 2023 as director of the cancer center and institute, he remained a full-time faculty member and clinician. The NCI-designated cancer center changed its name in 2017 to closely align with the new facility that shared the same name: the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Dr. Cowan died on Dec. 15.

February’s service will include remarks from several individuals who worked closely with Dr. Cowan, as well as a video tribute.

For those unable to attend in person, a webinar link via Zoom will be available here.

Those who would like to share a reflection or anecdote regarding Dr. Cowan are encouraged to do so here.

The University of Nebraska Foundation is seeking funds to establish a faculty chair in honor of Dr. Cowan’s distinguished career and impact. Information is available here. To make a gift in his memory, please direct your gift to the NU Foundation at this link.
