Over 100 UNMC researchers rank among most cited

More than 100 current and former UNMC researchers have been identified as among the top 2% of all researchers in the world in their fields, according to a Stanford University study that uses standardized citation metrics to rank researchers worldwide.

In academic papers, citations are used to reference earlier published research. The frequency of a researcher’s work being cited in other publications is often a strong indicator of their impact and reputation.

The Stanford researchers created a standardized, composite citation indicator (c-score) based on several citation metrics (described in their 2016 paper) and then analyzed the work of more than 6 million scientists worldwide to rank them within their field of study based on their career-long or single-year output.

Since releasing its first database in 2019, the Stanford team has provided yearly updates to these rankings based on the latest available Scopus profile data.

At UNMC, faculty members from the colleges of medicine, pharmacy, nursing and public health, as well as the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases, were recognized in the most recent database of the 100,000 top-cited scientists (based on Scopus data through the end of 2023).

UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, called the number a testament to the level of work UNMC researchers are doing.

“Research is an integral part of UNMC’s mission to create healthier futures for people in Nebraska and beyond,” Dr. Davies said. “We are excited to see so many current and former UNMC investigators recognized as among the most influential in their field.”

UNMC Vice Chancellor for Research Ken Bayles, PhD, said:

“These rankings are yet another indicator of the productivity of our talented faculty and the impact of their research on the broader research community.”

Here is the list of UNMC’s top-cited researchers, current and former, according to the latest rankings generated by the study. Because the list includes citations of existing work, it includes some former faculty who have passed away.
