Center for preparedness holds symposia series across Nebraska

Attendees participating in the UNMC College of Public Health’s Center for Preparedness and Emergency Response Solutions 2024 Annual Symposia Series.

The UNMC College of Public Health’s Center for Preparedness and Emergency Response Solutions completed its 2024 Annual Symposia Series in June. A total of six events were held between March and June across the state in Bellevue, Norfolk, Kearney, Bridgeport, North Platte and Beatrice.

Topics at each session included a “State of the State” by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, chemical and biological terrorism threats, business continuity, crisis standards of care and hazmat capabilities. Participants represented state and local health departments, hospitals, long-term care facilities, emergency medical services, emergency management and other health care and public health organizations.

For the first time, a functional Medical Response and Surge Exercise was held in conjunction with the symposia series at each location. Topics that provided relevant knowledge for the chemical exercise were presented during the first day to ensure participants were well-prepared for the functional exercise the following day. The experience tested the capabilities and functions of Nebraska’s health care coalitions and response system.

Planning already is underway for the 2025 Symposia Series. For additional information, contact Leslie Scofield by email.
