Chief resident spotlight: Paul Harding, MD

Paul Harding, MD

Paul Harding, MD, is a resident physician with the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.

Name: Paul Harding, MD

Hometown: Omaha

Title and department at UNMC: Resident physician, UNMC Department of Anesthesiology

Education: MD, University of Nebraska Medical Center

What drew you to a career in anesthesiology: I shadowed a few anesthesiologists in the department at UNMC during my first few years of medical school and grew to love the work environment in the OR and mix of procedures, physiology and pharmacology.

Why I chose UNMC: I was born and raised in Omaha and have always loved the city in general. The training at UNMC with critically ill patients and complex cases also will prepare me well for my career.

Do you have any specific goals as chief resident? I think there has been a longstanding family culture in our program that Janie and I both hope to continue. The residents within our program since I have been here have always been willing to help other residents out in times of need, which is so beneficial during residency training.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I have long considered graduating medical school and matching into residency my greatest achievement. Being elected as one of the chief residents by my peer residents is a great honor, as well.

What is your life like outside of work?
I spend a lot of time outside of work with my family and friends in Omaha. I also have a bernedoodle who loves walks, hikes and getting his nose into things he isn’t supposed to.

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I recently moved into a new house and love my new neighborhood close to the hospital.
  • I have three older sisters, all of whom work in the medical field.
  • I organize a pickup basketball league at my old high school on Sunday mornings during the winter.
