Scientists advocate for scientific research funding
Members of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, including UNMC’s Steve Caplan, PhD, met with elected officials and staff on Capitol Hill in May as part of the organization’s annual Capitol Hill Day.
An article by ASBMB Today, the association’s member magazine, says 25 members from 20 states participated in 65 meetings in Washington, D.C., “to stress the importance of protecting and sustainably funding basic scientific research.”
ASBMB members urged an increase in the budgets for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy Office of Science in order “to sustain the U.S. scientific enterprise,” the article says.
Dr. Caplan, a professor in the UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is a member of the organization’s Public Affairs Advisory Committee and participated in the meetings.
“Fundamental research is one of the most important things for our society,” Dr. Caplan said in the article. “I think it’s something that’s not understood and not appreciated enough.
“This is our opportunity to advocate — to educate the politicians and policymakers and help them better understand what research can do for society on an economic level and also how it brings advances to applied science that will drive growth and better health for the citizens of our country and the globe.”
