On May 29, UNMC’s Engage Wellness Medical Fitness Center celebrated its members by participating in the 31st annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day, the nation’s largest older adult health and wellness event.
The day was full of events, working out both mind and body – just as the facility is best known for.
As members filed in that morning, Omaha’s Jo-on-the-Go Espresso Catering prepared coffees and smoothies for everyone who jumped in line.
In between Minute to Win It games run by staff all day, members learned new fitness routines and activities, including “Paddle Zlam,” a competitive twist on pickleball.
Members also learned how to break a sweat from their chair during a chair fitness demo, taught by guest instructor Tamika Koehler of Chair One Fitness.
During a midday break, members sat down for healthy snacks and an educational talk presented by Jenna Wuebker, a nutrition therapist with Nebraska Medicine.
In the afternoon, members learned beginner line dancing choreography. Line dancing once was a group movement class at Engage Wellness, and many members said they were thrilled with the line-dance event.
