UNMC College of Medicine Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs Steven Lisco, MD, was selected from a competitive national applicant pool for the Association of American Medical Colleges Council of Deans fellowship program. The year-long program is designed to provide senior faculty members with experiences and training to enhance professional development as future leaders in academic medicine.
As one of six participants in the program, Dr. Lisco will learn from dean mentors at other medical schools, complete a leadership project, participate in Council of Deans meetings and take part in executive development seminars for deans to learn about the responsibilities and challenges faced by this key leadership position.
Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, nominated Dr. Lisco for the fellowship. “Dr. Lisco is an exceptional leader, and we are fortunate to have him at the UNMC College of Medicine,” Dr. Britigan said. “His outstanding leadership will allow him to thrive in this fellowship program.”
Dr. Lisco views the fellowship as an excellent opportunity to work with leaders from medical colleges and health systems from across the country, an experience that will be valuable to his current dual roles of senior associate dean for clinical affairs at the college of medicine and chief academic officer at Nebraska Medicine.
“The fellowship lets you learn how different medical schools operate and how they work with their health systems. It also allows fellows to observe the critical role deans play in that relationship,” Dr. Lisco said. “This experience will help me acquire additional skills and methods that could be applied here, ultimately enhancing Nebraska Medicine and UNMC.”
Dr. Lisco said he is especially excited about the immediate benefit the fellowship participation will have on his current responsibilities at Nebraska Medicine – leading research, education and the development of the clinical learning environment – something he views as critical to the success of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine over the next five to 10 years.
According to the AAMC COD fellowship website, successful candidates for the program will have demonstrated significant preparation for leadership and will benefit most from participation in the program. The program seeks applicants from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to individual demographics, academic discipline, institutional position, institution type and geographic location.
“It’s a huge honor to be selected and I’m incredibly grateful to Dr. Britigan for his support,” Dr. Lisco said. “It’s a great opportunity for a physician leader to be able to participate in a program like this.”
Congratulations!!!
