Dr. Donnelly travels to ‘birthplace of cytology’

How often does one get to travel to the birthplace of their profession? Amber Donnelly, PhD, Leuschen Professor and associate dean for student affairs in the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions, recently traveled to Kymi, Greece, for a symposium honoring the legacy of George Nicholas Papanicolaou, MD.

Dr. Papanicolaou, as Dr. Donnelly’s students know well, developed the screening for cervical cancer, or Pap smear, among other achievements. He is hailed as a hero and medical pioneer in Greece, the United States and internationally. Dr. Papanicolaou’s birthday, May 13, is National Cytology Day. For more on Dr. Donnelly’s “homecoming” to Dr. Pap’s hometown, please see this blog post from the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions.
