Access personal safety resources from the palm of your hand with the new UNMC Alert mobile app.
This app is an optional feature of the med center’s new emergency alert notification system that launched this week. It is available to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play or the HUB.
Here are some of the app’s features.
Emergency contacts
With the tap of a button, connect with 911, UNMC Public Safety or the Omaha Police Department (for non-emergencies).
Friend Walk
Users can send their location in real-time to a friend so they can watch as they walk to a destination. As friends watch, they can trigger a call to emergency services if necessary. Here’s how the safety feature works:
- Open the app and select “Friend Walk.”
- At the bottom of the mobile webpage, select “Start Friend Walk” and pick a contact to send the user’s location.
- The contact will receive the message with a link. When they click it, they’ll be taken to a map with the user’s location, and the user will be connected to them. To cancel a request, simply return to the main menu.
- Pick a destination and start moving.
- If in a panic situation, hit the button to notify the friend and start an emergency call.
- If the user or their contact disconnects, it will end the walk and offer the option to make an emergency call (just in case).
- When the user reaches the destination, finish the trip and disconnect.
Access public safety information
Learn how to report an emergency, when to call and what to say. Use the “Report A Concern” button to report an incident that happens on UNMC or Nebraska Medicine property.
Emergency procedures
Access the emergency preparedness guide designed to assist during many emergencies, such as fire, disaster, bomb threats or medical emergencies.
Safety toolbox
Use this feature to update emergency alert messages, send an “I’m OK” alert to a recipient of the user’s choosing in an emergency situation and share the app.
Campus map
Get a snapshot of the UNMC and Nebraska Medical Center campus to help find a location and understand exit options in case of an emergency.
Downloading the app is optional for colleagues – and not required to receive UNMC Alert notifications.
