UNMC will celebrate its annual CultureFest event on April 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Truhlsen Events Center.
CultureFest is filled with interactive booths, food and entertainment. This year’s theme of “Rhythm of the Islands” will celebrate the islands of Australia, Hawaii and Jamaica.
Several food and beverage stations will offer free samples (while supplies lasts) of products created or native to each of the Islands, including Jerk chicken wings, Australian snag sausage, Moko Loko and Hawaiian Sun tropical punch.
Event programming will begin at 11:40 a.m., with a special presentation and demonstration from Chris Brookins, No Limit Hair Salon, and Jayida Moore, The Braid Fix, on the history of hair braiding. St. Patrick Reid, PhD, associate professor in the UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, will present a spoken word piece at noon.
Attendees can participate in a hula hoop contest at 12:20 p.m. A Ukulele musical presentation will take place at 12:50 p.m., and closing out the event will be a cultural dance from the Filipino-American Organization of Metropolitan Omaha at 1:15 p.m.
Faculty, staff and students can participate in online trivia on the day of the event.
