Shelby Schelkopf, MD, is a new resident physician at UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.
Why did you choose the medical field?
All I remember is wanting to be just like my pediatrician when I was a first grader. After that, there wasn’t another field of work that enticed me as much as medicine or a subject I enjoyed as much as science. I also realized that one of my passions was caring for and raising up others.
What made you choose anesthesiology?
I wanted to do everything from orthopedic surgery to hospital medicine during medical school, and I found anesthesiology to be a mix of everything I enjoyed. I get to apply the pathophysiology I love in the quick-paced environment of the best room in a hospital, the OR. And all the people are wonderful!!
List 3 accomplishments you are proud of:
- Being the first in my family to go through medical school.
- The friendships and mentorships I have formed throughout medical school.
- Matching into anesthesiology!!
Three things about you that others may not know:
- Since last May, I have read 60+ books. I have lots of recommendations!
- I love to bake and think I have almost mastered my version of a monster cookie.
- In college, I spent a summer studying abroad and was able to visit seven countries in Europe.
