You are the recipient of the Innovative Practices in Education Award. How has innovation played a part in your teaching career?
I believe the educational process starts as a scaffold that is continuously expanded and filled by acquired knowledge. Once the foundation exists, I use innovation in education to complete the build. Innovative teaching that promotes both contextual and experiential learning is powerful. Some examples of innovation in my teaching career include curriculum design, modules, video games, laboratory experiences, simulation and live patient encounters.
Describe your proudest moment as an educator.
My proudest moments as an educator are when trainees tell me that I made a difference in their educational journey.
What advice would you give other faculty members who want to have an impact in education?
Investing in the next generation of medical professionals will be one of the most rewarding aspects of your professional career. Learners value educators who are committed, engaged, passionate and brave. Remember to have fun along the way.
