Physician Anesthesiologists Week — held Jan. 28 – Feb. 4. — recognized physician anesthesiologists for their unique skill set, vast knowledge, leadership and dedication to excellence in patient care, medical education and research.
Here we spotlight:
Name: Rebecca Aron, MD
Hometown: Mt. Pleasant, Michigan
Title and department at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine: Cardiac anesthesiology associate professor, cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship program director, UNMC Department of Anesthesiology; cardiac anesthesiologist, Nebraska Medicine
How I became interested in cardiothoracic anesthesiology:
I really enjoyed that in cardiac anesthesia we are a true integral part of the team – the surgeons depend on us to help with diagnosis, management and planning throughout surgery.
Education:
- BS, chemical engineering, University of Michigan
- MS, biomedical engineering, University of Michigan
- MD, University of Michigan
- Anesthesia residency, University of California – San Francisco
- Cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship, Duke University
Professional Memberships:
- American Society of Anesthesiology
- Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists
Professional and medical interests:
I serve as the chair of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) Adult Cardiac Anesthesia Maintenance of Anesthesia (MOCA) Committee. The committee edits and reviews questions that are distributed for maintenance of adult cardiac anesthesia after the initial certification. The committee also guides decisions related to maintenance of anesthesia and meet several times a year with the chairs of all the ABA committees to review relevant issues related to the ABA exams.
Two things people may not know about me:
- I initially didn’t plan to go into medicine and worked as an engineer at a medical device company (Guidant, now Boston Scientific) for several years prior to going back to medical school. I have several patents related to this work.
- My husband also works at UNMC (as a radiologist). We have two daughters (ages 3 and 7) and two dogs (Pickles and Sundae, Shih Tzu and Lhasa).
