UNMC was honored to host the leadership of our partners institution, Universidad de Anahuac Veracruz (UAV), Nov. 7-12, 2023. The visit was arranged at the invitation of Chancellor Jeffrey Gold, MD, and was hosted by the college of medicine dean’s office, the department of family medicine, and the UNMC Office of Global Engagement.
The visiting delegation was led by Chancellor Luis Linares Romero and included senior members of the academic and administrative, multiple-campus university and the leadership of the UAV Board of Governors.
The strategic partnership with UAV was initiated in 2016 when the initial Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was created between UAV and the UNMC College of Public Health. The first activity was the offering of a hybrid course, involving both UAV and UNMC students together, focusing on the principles of public health. Since that time, the program has expanded to include medical Spanish and service-learning exchange programs directed by the UNMC Department of Family Medicine. Upon expiration of the original MOU, it was amended and restated in 2021 to reaffirm our joint commitments to the partnership and to establish a platform for an expanded range of collaborative activities. Reflecting on the success of these initial programs, both institutions expressed the desire to explore and expand the partnership into new areas that would benefit our students, faculty, and the communities we serve.
This visit’s purpose was to celebrate the partnership’s success and, most importantly, to explore other areas of mutual interest. A specific outcome was the development of specific timelines and action steps for the implementation of priority activities. The delegation returned home with a list of potential areas of interest including but not limited to the exchange of residents, collaboration with iEXCEL and the simulation laboratory, and the department of surgery, college of medicine.
“The Universidad de Anahuac is one of our very good partners,” Jane Meza, PhD, associate vice chancellor for global engagement. “We look forward to expanding our collaborations that will benefit both universities.”
