The biocontainment unit and latest innovations in health care were just a few of the things that surprised Nebraska State Senator John Arch, on his most recent visit to UNMC.
Yet, the one thing that impressed him the most was intangible.
The vision of UNMC has produced so many new developments, he said, that every visit introduces him to the next innovation.
And his most recent visit on Dec. 4 did not disappoint.
“I knew UNMC was a leader when it comes to the containment and treatment of infectious diseases, but I didn’t realize the extent that UNMC has become so widely recognized in national security for high-consequence infections,” Sen. Arch said.
After a morning conversation with UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, Sen. Arch took a tour of the Global Center for Health Security located inside the Davis Global Center.
There, he learned how it was UNMC that taught the world “The Nebraska Ebola Method,” a clinical course developed during and after the 2014 outbreak, in which health professionals learn the best practices in caring for a patient infected with Ebola.
Sen. Arch also got an in-depth look into how UNMC led the world in COVID-19 drug therapy research into Remdesivir, as well as developing and implementing best practices when it comes to stopping the spread of the virus and new methods to protect health professions caring for those patients.
“We are very grateful that the Speaker of the Unicameral Legislature, Sen. John Arch, made the time in his very busy schedule to visit UNMC and experience first-hand the remarkable leadership team of several of our health security programs and tour our amazing facilities,” Dr. Gold said, “facilities that only exist because of highly successful public private partnerships. It was also a great opportunity to learn from Speaker Arch about his inspiring work to serve our state.”
Said Sen. Arch: “As a state senator it’s important to promote policies that allow an institution such as UNMC to continue pursuing its vision, moving both the state and the country forward.”
