Speaker to address Native American health care’s history

Jonathan Baines, MD, PhD

In honor of Native American Heritage month, Jonathan Baines, MD, PhD, will give a presentation about the legal policy history of Native American health care this Wednesday, Nov. 29.

A member of the Alaska Tlingit and Tsimshian Tribes, Dr. Baines is a family medicine obstetrics physician with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and medical director of the Native CIRCLE within the Native American programs umbrella of the Mayo Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Baines also is the co-director of Spirit of Eagles, a National Cancer Institute-funded special populations network.

An American Indian-Alaska Native initiative on cancer, Spirit of Eagles focuses on increasing cancer awareness among tribal nations, organizations and community-based participatory research opportunities to address culturally relevant education, training and research throughout the United States.
