Board of Counselors learn about programming, patient care during tour of MMI

Members of the UNMC Chancellor's Board of Counselors head upstairs to tour the Munroe-Meyer Institute during a recent visit.

Dozens of members of the UNMC Chancellor’s Board of Counselors visited the Munroe-Meyer Institute for tours of the facility last month.

Members of the statewide citizen advisory group serve as ambassadors for UNMC — learning about the university’s programs and initiatives and sharing knowledge with their communities — as well as providing advice and counsel to campus leaders.

MMI impressed the board members from the start, with some guests pausing to admire the artwork near the main entrance as the tour began in the building’s lobby.

On the second floor, the counselors learned about and saw the gym, the warm- and cold-water swimming pools, Virtual Reality Laboratory and the Caring for Champions program.

MMI Director Karoly Mirnics, MD, PhD, called the Board of Counselors a “lifeline of the university” and said he’s grateful for their support.

“The Board of Counselors is an amazing group of individuals from across the state of Nebraska who are dedicated to UNMC,” Dr. Mirnics said. “We are very proud to showcase our achievements.”

The visit was a first for Sara Kohen of Omaha, director of advancement at Friedel Jewish Academy, who is in her second year on the board.

Kohen said she came in excited to learn more about MMI’s programming and patient care. After the tour, she was struck by how welcoming the space is and how many opportunities it provides for families in the broader community.

“It’s amazing how multifaceted the patient care is,” Kohen said. “It seems to do a good job of pairing traditional care with cutting-edge technology and research.”
