Distinguished Scientist

The Distinguished Scientist Award — which is sponsored by the chancellor — recognizes researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.

  • Name: Joseph Khoury, MD
  • Title: Stokes-Shackleford Professor and Chair, Department of Pathology and Microbiology, UNMC College of Medicine
  • Joined UNMC: June 2022
  • Hometown: Moved from Houston, Texas. Born in Lebanon.

Please describe your research focus in three words or less: Cancer research

Why is research important in the world today? Research through sound scientific methodology is fundamental for knowledge growth and improving lives.

My research will make a difference because: It is focused on a challenging disease that remains difficult to prevent and treat.

The best advice I’ve ever received is: Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability.

Three things you may not know about me are:

  • I enjoy the outdoors.
  • I like cold weather.
  • I put people first.
