Grace Johnson to speak on traditional Lakota Sioux parenting

Grace Johnson

Traditional parenting practices of the Lakota Sioux are the focus of a Sept. 26 presentation by Grace Johnson, a tribal and mental health consultant and founder of Red Nation Healing Counseling and Consulting.

“Prevention Begins Before Birth” begins at noon in room 2010 of the Sorrell Center. A virtual option is available at this link.

“Traditional Native American child rearing practices beautifully align with early childhood development of infants and toddlers that created strong bonds with the parents, enhanced cognitive abilities and provide protective emotional factors for the child,” Johnson said.

“These practices were almost completely destroyed during colonization and the devastating effects of the boarding schools on Native families,” she said.

Today, tribes are reclaiming these practices and encouraging families to embrace the wisdom of their ancestors, Johnson said.

This session is co-sponsored by the Nebraska Medicine Inclusion and Diversity Office, UNMC College of Public Health Nebraska Healing program and the UNMC Office of Inclusion and Equity.
