Upcoming symposium offers ideas for innovative education

UNMC faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the first annual InnovatED Symposium, to be held Thursday, Sept. 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event is hosted by the UNMC Interprofessional Academy of Educators and UNMC Distance Education.

The inaugural symposium will bring together individuals from across the university who are passionate about advancing their teaching approaches and fostering new collaborations with peers. Register to attend.

The event will include a keynote presentation on generative AI by Victor Winter, PhD, professor of computer science at the University of Nebraska Omaha. During his presentation, Dr. Winter will explain how to maximize engagement with generative AI, how the technology works, its strengths and weaknesses, and what the future might hold.

“We are excited to host this interprofessional event that highlights innovative educational endeavors on our campus and provides a platform to discuss new and upcoming topics in education,” said Brian Boerner, MD, director of UNMC Interprofessional Academy of Educators. “The InnovatED Symposium promises to be an educational, engaging and inspiring event — and we hope all attendees walk away with new strategies they can immediately incorporate.”

Event cohost Analisa McMillan, PhD, director of UNMC Distance Education, agreed. “In the age of advanced technology and evolving pedagogical approaches, the InnovatED Symposium is an invaluable platform for educators to come together and advance their knowledge and skills. We have some of the best minds in health professions presenting innovations in education, teaching techniques and unlocking the potential of artificial intelligence.”

Other presentations throughout the day will cover topics including inclusive classroom strategies, improving summative assessments, incorporating simulation, using ChatGPT and more. View the full schedule of events.

Additionally, the Catalyst for Education award winner will be announced at the symposium. The award recognizes a staff member in an educational support role whose contributions have been integral to furthering the educational mission at UNMC.

The InnovatED Symposium is free to attend, and lunch will be served; however, registration is required. With questions, email the academy.
