With Nebraska’s new permitless conceal carry law, UNMC police and Public Safety remind the med center that the campus policy on deadly weapons, including guns, remains unchanged.
“Nothing has changed for us,” said Deputy Chief Jerry Baggett with UNMC’s Department of Public Safety. “The med center prohibits possession of deadly weapons on university property.”
Under campus policy, “no persons, on or entering university premises, will be allowed to retain in their possession firearms, guns, electroshock weapons, weapons, ammunition explosives or incendiary devices. Any item classifiable as a potentially dangerous weapon, and for which a purpose of possession cannot be established, is prohibited. Members of the law enforcement agencies of municipal, county, state and federal governments on official visits on campus are exempt from this provision.”
The reminder comes as LB 77, Nebraska’s permitless concealed carry law, went into effect Sept. 2. The new law allows Nebraskans 21 and older who can legally own a gun to conceal carry without paying $100 for a permit or taking a gun safety class.
Public Safety reminds individuals that signage on university building entrances denote that weapons are not allowed.
Earlier this year, the department, which includes law enforcement officers and security officers, announced implementation of more security cameras in campus parking lots and garages.
Said Deputy Chief Baggett: “Public Safety works round-the-clock to keep our campuses safe, but it also takes a group effort and the eyes and ears of employees, students, visitors and patients.”
